BIODYNAMIC BEEKEEPING

"I commend this book to not only experienced beekeepers who would like to transition to a more bee-friendly approach, but also beginners who, while having access in some form to instruction about basic beekeeping, do not want to be steered into the conventional, mechanistic apiculture that new generations of beekeepers are increasingly finding unsatisfactory."

David Heaf

Author of The Bee-friendly Beekeeper & Natural Beekeeping with the Warré Hive

Many beekeepers today, faced with an alarming decline in the bee population, are looking for a more sustainable way to care for their hives. Biodynamic methods, which consider the influence of the stars and planets on bee activity and habitats, offer an approach which helps foster happier and healthier bees.

In this fascinating book, biodynamic beekeeping expert Matthias Thun shares advice and knowledge gained from more than 50 years' experience of keeping bees, including:

• Which days are better for inspecting colonies and which days for gathering honey

• The challenges and advantages of breeding queen bees

• How to artificially induce swarming to propagate colonies

• How to use biodynamic ashing techniques to combat varroa mites

• Instructions for making winter feeds according to current biodynamic thinking

Ideal for both experienced beekeepers seeking to convert to biodynamic methods and current biodynamic beekeepers, this readable book offers a unique and personal insight into the theory and practice of biodynamic beekeeping.

Matthias Thun (1948-2020)

The son of biodynamic pioneer Maria Thun, was an international expert on biodynamic beekeeping with over 50 years' experience.

BREEDING SUPER BEES

Steve Taber spent a life time with bees – both in his native America and in Europe. It is not wrong to say that he forgot more about breeding than most people ever knew – and even then he knew more!! John Phipps the Editor of The Beekeepers Quarterly said that “If Steve said something you could always reckon on it being accurate” What a recommendation for a book.

NO BEES, NO LIFE

by Peter Kosmus, Boštjan Noě and Karolina Vrtaěnik together with the 66 most important names in the field of beekeeping from 32 countries.
The authors wrote this book to present bees and their great importance for the environment and people in an accessible way. Bees provide us with excellent bee products (honey, beeswax, pollen, royal jelly ... ), but their essential role is to pollinate plants, which supplies us with one third of our food. Besides being vital for food production, pollination also preserves plant diversity and thus influences ecosystems that give us oxygen, fuel, clean water, air, regulate the weather, the climate ... In addition to that, bees are a part of our lives in many other ways.

The book covers various topics, such as the history of bees, bee products, the importance of continuous education of beekeepers, the importance of bees and reasons for their endangerment in certain parts of the world. It describes various types of beekeeping around the world, but also apitherapy and apitourism that have developed especially in the recent period. The book also describes the significance of bees in religion and how bees can serve as an example of an exemplary life centred around values. It also contains a text on how beekeeping can help disabled people.

The purpose of the book is to raise awareness about the dependence of people on bees and nature. Thus, the book speaks to every individual, community or company and shows them how they can contribute to better conditions for the survival of bees.

The book is intended for a wide readership, including those who do not know much about bees, and those who do and would like to learn more.

THE ASIAN HORNET

Threats, Biology & Expansion

Confirmed sighting in Devon - These deadly Asian hornets have now invaded the UK and pose threat to Britain’s honey bees!!!

The accidental introduction of the Asian hornet or more accurately the yellow-legged hornet into France and South Korea over ten years ago and its subsequent spread to neighbouring countries has been worrying both governments and beekeepers alike. Many people are now seeking more information on this new threat to our beloved honey bees. Hornet biology is very different to that of honey bees and this can lead to misunderstandings and false assumptions. So, this book is aimed at anyone wanting to learn more about hornets, why the Asian hornet possesses such a threat, and what you can do about it.

While the natural history of hornets makes their eradication impossible, it is important that all interested parties are well informed about their biology and potential impact. The Asian hornet will continue to expand its range into new countries irrespective of the measures taken, so education is the best way to lessen their impact.

This book aims to cover all the key aspects of the hornets’ biology including the impact they have on both people and honey bees. The information presented is gained from various sources during the many years I studied hornets in Asia (mainly Japan), and more recently via the ever-expanding scientic literature on the spread and impact of the Asian hornet both in France and South Korea.

HONEY, HARVESTING & EXTRACTING

by Somerville, Winner & Frost

AG Guide: A Practical Handbook from the NSW Government, Department of Primary Industries.

We have recently taken into stock the third title in the Australian series "Ag Guide, A Practical Handbook". This book informs beekeepers of best practices so that their hard work results in a product of optimum quality. It also informs beekeepers of the threats to honey quality which can occur through poor handling skills or poor design of facilities.

Reasons for being aware of the best ways to handle the product include food quality and food safety.

  • Honey – harvesting and extracting by Doug Somerville and Bill Winner is the latest volume in a Practical Handbook series from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries.
  • Dr. Somerville is Technical Specialist for the NSW Department and Bill Winner Relations Officer for Capitano Honey – the major commercial Australian exporter.
  • The book deals in depth with removing and extracting honey under the best possible conditions and may be seen as a reference manual for all serious beekeepers.
  • It covers extraction premises and their design, the process and maintaining honey quality throughout.
  • A4: 122 pages fully illustrated throughout in full colour.
This is a very important volume for those who are considering to or presently sell their honey.
